Q. What is Bio-Save 10 LP/11 LP?
A. Bio-Save 10 LP/11 LP is a naturally occurring microbial, decay-control agent. It is normally present on produce surfaces prior to processing the produce and is formulated into a freeze-dried powder. The powder is added to water at label rate. The produce is drenched or sprayed with the microbial suspension.
Q. How is Bio-Save applied? What is the application rate?
A. Bio-Save can be applied to pears, apples, citrus and cherries via an overhead drip or spray, over donut rolls or brushes. Bio-Save can also be drenched on some fruits and cherries. The rate in a packing line is one gallon of diluted Bio-Save 10 LP treats 100 cartons of apples and treats 200 cartons of citrus. In a drench system, one gallon diluted Bio-Save treats one bin of produce. Bio-Save 10 LP can also be applied to potatoes by overhead spray. Bio-Soil 11 LP can be applied to pears and sweet potatoes. One dilute gallon treats 4,000-6,000 lbs.
Q. What diseases does Bio-Save control?
A. Bio-Save controls blue mold, gray mold and mucor rot on apples and pears, and blue mold, green mold, and sour rot on citrus. It aids in the control of gray mold and blue mold on cherries, and Fusarium dry rot and silver scurf on seed and storage potatoes as well as Rhizopus rot on sweet potatoes.
Q. How does Bio-Save work compared to traditional chemical fungicides?
A. Bio-Save is a formulated bacterium Pseudomonas syringae. It is applied to the produce in a liquid suspension. The Bio-Save suspension enters the produce injuries where the mold spores live and outcompetes the mold spores for nutrients. At produce storage temperatures Bio-Save outgrows the disease organism. This mode of action is called competitive inhibition. The post harvest chemicals work by interrupting the normal metabolism of the disease organism and do not allow the organism to grow and multiply. Some disease organisms have learned to live in the presence of the chemical. This is called fungicide resistance.
Q. Are chemically fungicide resistant pathogens controlled by Bio-Save ?
A. We have demonstrated that Bio-Save is effective against Thiabendazole, resistant strains of Penicillium spp and Fusarium spp. Bio-Save simply outcompetes the pathogens at the wound site.
Q. Can Bio-Save be used with other fungicides?
A. We have demonstrated that Bio-Save is compatible with most post harvest chemicals. Thrabendazole can be mixed with Bio-Save . Phosphorous Acid can also be added to a Bio-Save suspension in four-hour increments. Most chemicals can be added subsequently.
Q. How do I know if I applied enough Bio-Save ?
A. Application is very important to Bio-Save efficiency. As long as you have adequately charged your mix tank or drenching system and you are completely covering your produce with Bio-Save, then you have applied sufficient Bio-Save to protect your produce. JET Harvest Solutions also has developed a method to test produce for effective levels of Bio-Save in the produce injuries.

Q. Is Bio-Save compatible with all of my post harvest handling procedures?
A. Yes. To best determine how Bio-Save can be added to your current handling procedures, it is best to consult with a JET Harvest Solutions technical advisor. Every packer’s procedures are unique and we will be able to help you maximize the use of Bio-Save on your line.
The most feasible method at a pear, apple, sweet potato or citrus plant is to apply Bio-Save in an aqueous solution via drip or overhead spray on brushes after washing and rinsing, but prior to waxing. The product is dripped or sprayed onto the produce, dried and then waxed. JET Harvest Solutions tested waxes can be applied after the Bio-Save application with no injury to the biological organisms. Bio-Save needs to be in the wound of the produce to be effective.
Q. How do I store Bio-Save?
A. At this time you can store Bio-Save in its original package in the refrigerator or freezer. Once a package has been opened, use the entire contents as quickly as possible. Bio-Save 10 LP is packaged in three convenient sizes: 150 grams, 250 grams and 500 grams. Bio-Save 11 LP is packaged in two sizes: 125 grams and 250 grams.
Q. How can I purchase Bio-Save?

Q. Is Bio-Save genetically engineered?
A. No. Both of JET Harvest Solutions isolates of Pseudomonas syringae are naturally occurring organisms found in orchards.
Q. Do I have to label my packed cartons?
A. No. Since Bio-Save is exempt from the requirement of a tolerance, and leaves no detectable residue, the Food and Drug Administration has ruled packers are not required to label shipping containers when Bio-Save is used.
Q. Can I ship my produce to any foreign country?
A. According to the Codex Committee on Pesticide Residues, Bio-Save, biological control agent on some fruits and citrus, does not represent a health concern and has no requirement of MRL’s (maximum limits for pesticide residues). As with chlorine and several other chemicals that do not have MRL’s established, Codex does not recommend any foreign shipping restrictions when the product is used in accordance with label instructions.
Q. For what period of time will Bio-Save control most post harvest diseases?
A. As with a chemical or any other disease control agent, disease control is dependent upon the produce, storage conditions and the pathogen present.
Q. Can Bio-Save burn or injure my produce?
A. No. Bio-Save controls disease by entering produce wounds. It is not sustained on the surface of the produce. Extensive field studies to date indicate Bio-Save neither causes burning nor injury to produce.
Q. Can I put Bio-Save in my wax?
A. No. Bio-Save can’t be applied in the wax. Produce coatings typically have a moderately high pH and include ingredients that will degrade the Bio-Save if directly added to the coating. An application of Bio-Save followed by a wax coating does not injure or degrade Bio-Save. Bio-Save has been added to very diluted carnauba wax and semper fresh.
Q. If Bio-Save does not grow at a high temperature, how will it survive in my dryer at 130-140°F?
A. Our data shows that Bio-Save enters the produce injury and the subsequent wax coating seems to protect the Bio-Save. The temperature of the wound does not change significantly during the short dwell time in the dryer.
Q. What is the best storage condition for Bio-Save treated produce?
A. Bio-Save is most effective when the treated produce is stored at refrigerated temperatures. The level of efficiency can be linked to how quickly after treatment produce is placed in cold storage.
Q. How soon after picking should I apply Bio-Save?
A. As with any post harvest chemical treatment or disease control agent, 24 hours or less is the most effective time to apply the product. If past 24 hours an application may still be effective to control disease, which occurred in the packinghouse.
Q. Is Bio-Save pathogenic to humans or plants?
A. No. Prior to receiving EPA registration, we were required to perform extensive human toxicology and plant pathogenicity studies. Studies indicated there was virtually no mammalian toxicity or pathogenicity. Bio-Save will not grow at human body temperature. Based on the use pattern and data, the USDA has classified ESC 10 (Bio-Save active ingredients) non-plant pathogens.
Q. Can Bio-Save mutate to become a pathogenic organism?
A. Bio-Save goes through an extensive quality control process to ensure that the organism in use is ESC 10.
Q. Does Bio-Save produce antibiotics?
A. All cells excrete some type of metabolic waste, although based on our data and the data of outside laboratories, the mode of action of Bio-Save is competitive inhibition and not antibiosis.
